Northampton General Hospital
The Plastic Surgery Team, at Northampton General Hospital, that looks after Breast Reconstruction consists of a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Mr Vaingankar, a Registrar in Plastic Surgery, a Consultant Anaesthetist who anaesthetises the patients and theatre nurses who are involved in assisting the surgical team during the operation. A lot of other staff are involved in looking after the patients during their journey through the hospital, for a breast reconstruction procedure. This includes nursing staff on the ward, who nurse post-operative patients, the Breast Care Nurses who are involved in the pre and post-operative management of these patients and Plastic Surgery Out-patient Nurses who are involved in the post-operative wound care and Dressing Clinic management of the patient.
The Plastic Surgery team at Northampton General offers various techniques for Breast Reconstruction including implant based reconstruction, latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction, pedicle TRAM reconstruction and lipo-modelling (fat filling). The Unit, in the future, hopes to offer microsurgical TRAM and DIEP flap reconstructions.
Mr Vaingankar, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, joined Northampton General Hospital in July 2006. His main interest, at Northampton General, is breast surgery and breast reconstruction. Mr Vaingankar is a fully trained and accredited Plastic Surgeon. He has trained extensively in Plastic Surgery, acquired the FRCS Plast qualification and is on the General Medical Council Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery. He is a full member of BAPRAS (British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons).
The rest of the team involved in the patient journey consists of the Medical Staff, Anaesthetist, Nurses, Physiotherapists and Medical Secretaries. The list below, though not comprehensive, mentions the various team members who the patient will meet or talk to during their journey through the hospital:
Consultant Anaesthetist, Dr Anji Dash
Registrar in Plastic Surgery – Mr Haroon Sheikh
Breast Care Nurses
Nicola Warden – Team Leader in Plastic Surgery in Theatres
Lyndsey Harris – Theatre Nurse
Gill Evans – RGN
Jayne Ponting and Andrea Cranston – Medical Secretaries
Stephanie Atkinson – Admissions Office
As a patient you will probably meet different team members starting at the original consultation through the operation in theatres, the post-operative stay on the ward and finally the follow-up appointments in clinic. Throughout your stay the aim of the entire team would be to treat you as an individual, with compassion, dignity and respect and to keep you fully informed about your care at all times.
