- Many women find it difficult to come to terms with the loss of a breast. Many women today are therefore opting to have their lost breast reconstructed
- Breast reconstruction is a procedure whereby a patient who has had a mastectomy has an operation to replace the lost breast tissue
- Breast reconstruction is achieved through several plastic surgery techniques that attempt to restore a breast to near normal shape, appearance and size
- Various techniques can be performed. A breast shape can be created with an implant that is placed beneath the skin and muscle that covers the chest, or by using skin and fat with, or without muscle, from another part of the body

- Although breast reconstruction can rebuild your breast it should be noted that results can be highly variable
- The nipple and areola (the darker area around the nipple) can also be added
- Most women who have had a mastectomy can have reconstruction
- Women who have had a lumpectomymay not need reconstruction but may be offered a procedure called lipofilling to improve the shape of the breast
- Your surgeon will advise you on the type of reconstruction that is most suitable for you. Your surgeon will consider:
- how much of the breast tissue has been removed
- how healthy the tissue is at the planned operation site
- whether or not you have had radiotherapy to be breast area and chest wall
- your general health and body build
- smoking history
- your personal preference
